Biography

Richard Frey is a lecturer in the Department of Conducting at the University of Michigan, focusing on Marching and Athletic Bands. He serves as the associate director of bands and directs the Michigan Marching Band and the Men's Basketball Band, also conducting the Campus Bands and guest conducting the Symphony Band and Chamber Winds. Frey previously held the position of associate director of Bands at Colorado State University, where he significantly contributed to the national and international reputation of the CSU Marching Band through performances at events such as the St. Patrick’s Festival Parade in Dublin and various bowl games. His research specializes in opera transcriptions for wind ensembles, focusing on 18th-century works, particularly those of Johann Went. Frey has presented his research at numerous universities and conducted various ensembles across the country. He has also participated in several performance tours in Europe and conducted world premieres of works by contemporary composers. Frey is a versatile musician with experience as a freelance percussionist and arranger for marching bands. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University in 2011.
