Biography

Richard P. Meier is a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, where he also serves as Dean's Advisor for Language Area Studies. He earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego, and has an extensive academic background with degrees from the University of Chicago and Washington University St. Louis. His research focuses on linguistics, particularly signed languages including American Sign Language and language acquisition in deaf children. Prof. Meier has published numerous works examining the linguistic aspects of signed languages and their acquisition, as well as the impact of modality on language development. He has held various roles including Associate Vice President for Research at UT Austin and has been actively involved in bringing American Sign Language instruction to the College of Liberal Arts. He served as the chair of the Department of Linguistics from 2006 to 2023 and held the Robert D. King Centennial Professorship during that period.
