Biography

Rick Cotton began teaching at the Gustavson School of Business in 2015, bringing a passion for understanding how individuals can thrive in their careers through effective talent management practices. His research focuses on the intersections of human capital, social capital, and positive psychological capital in fostering resilience and success at various levels of analysis, including individual, organizational, and societal contexts. He has studied high achievers and leaders in challenging work environments, such as Australian women miners and correctional officers. As a principal co-investigator in the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) research program, Rick collaborates with a global research community to analyze leadership effectiveness across cultures. He has published extensively, with contributions to leading journals, and has received numerous accolades for his research and teaching, including multiple awards from the Academy of Management. Rick has also facilitated many executive education sessions, serving prominent organizations like General Electric and BC Ferries. With a PhD from Boston College, he has previously held positions at Appalachian State University and has engaged in various consulting roles, especially in the areas of diversity and organizational change.
