Rita Sahai is a distinguished Lecturer and Music Director at the University of California, Davis, where she leads the Hindustani Vocal Ensemble. Having traveled to the United States decades ago, she undertook extensive music studies under the renowned sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, who bestowed upon her the title of Gayan Alankar (Jewel Music). A celebrated composer and performer, Sahai has toured extensively across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and India, and is in high demand in recording studios around the world. She has contributed her vocal talents to various projects, including the Grammy Award-winning artist Béla Fleck and the Isadora Duncan Award-winning music production of Alonzo King’s Sacred Texts. Sahai has produced her own CDs and created the Hindustani Choir, the “Vasundhara Choir,” to provide a performance platform for her students, and has published a music book featuring her compositions. She actively conducts workshops and lectures, bridging the cultural gap of Hindustani music to a broader audience. Notably, in March 2013, she was inducted into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame for her contributions to culture and the arts.
