Dr. Robert Blocker

Biography

Robert Blocker is an accomplished pianist and the William Edward Gilbert Professor of Piano at Yale School of Music. Since 1995, he has served in various leadership roles, including Dean of the School of Music and an affiliate Professor of Leadership Strategies at Yale's School of Management. Beyond his academic contributions, Blocker is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist who performs worldwide, including in orchestral and chamber music settings. As a public figure, he frequently appears on national radio and television, offering commentary and insights into music and education. Blocker's deanship was marked by remarkable growth in the School of Music's endowment and transformative initiatives that expanded access to music education. He has held leadership positions at several institutions, including founding Dean at UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture and Dean at the University of North Texas. Blocker began his musical studies at a young age, ultimately earning master's and doctoral degrees in piano performance from the University of North Texas, where he studied under renowned pianist Richard Cass. His scholarly contributions to music include editing significant publications and performing with prestigious orchestras around the globe.
