Biography

Robert Swedberg works to develop skills in singing actors through the Opera Studio program at the University of Michigan, where he regularly directs mainstage opera productions and teaches Business of Music. He was instrumental in producing 'Green Opera' productions on campus, positioning the University of Michigan as the first in the U.S. to create eco-friendly opera while taking steps to lower the carbon footprint of rehearsals and performances. Before joining the university in 2008, he served as general director of Orlando Opera from 1990 to 2007, managing one of the largest opera companies in the Southeast. His prior roles included general director of Syracuse Opera, manager/artistic director of Opera Carolina, and director of educational projects with Seattle Opera during the Pacific Northwest Wagner Festival. A committed educator, he developed training programs that helped emerging performers transition from university programs to professional careers. Originally entering university on a tuba scholarship, Swedberg transitioned to vocal studies, leading to his years as a professional singer and voice teacher, performing with notable organizations such as New York City Opera and Seattle Opera. He has directed more than 125 productions across the U.S. and internationally.
