Dr. Robert Uchida

Biography

Robert Uchida is a Canadian violinist and instructor at the University of Alberta. He has gained recognition for his 'ravishing sound and eloquence,' as noted by Strings Magazine. With a background as concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra since 2013, he previously held a position with Symphony Nova Scotia for seven years. Uchida was also invited to perform as Associate Concertmaster with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra during the 2005-2006 season. His guest leading engagements have included collaborations with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Uchida's discography features significant works like "Requiem 21.5: Violin Concerto" by Tim Brady and "Sonata Unaccompanied Violin" by Andrew Violette, both of which have received accolades, including the Classical Recording of the Year at the ECMAs. An educator at heart, he has held academic positions at Acadia University, Manhattan School of Music, and the National Arts Centre of Canada's Young Artists Program. His students have pursued further studies at prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, participating in ensembles across North America and Europe. Uchida holds both a Bachelor's Degree in Music from the University of Ottawa and a Master's Degree in Violin Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. He is passionate about volunteering, having contributed to Ronald McDonald House's Character Club in Edmonton.
