I am a Senior Lecturer in Economic Social History at the University of Glasgow. My PhD focused on smoking-related health in Britain and Germany, and I have contributed to various projects about civil registration, births, marriages, deaths, and reproductive loss in Scotland. My research primarily examines the interaction between legal policy and the historical context of social medicine, particularly how individuals navigate family-related life events. I am currently investigating the history of divorce in Scotland from its jurisdictional inception in 1830 until the late twentieth century, serving as a co-investigator on an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project about working-class marriage in Scotland between 1855 and 1976. I also explore the implications of civil, legal, and social policies on family formation and history, utilizing a range of sources including court records and personal testimonies. My teaching includes both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Economic Social History and I supervise PhD students in related fields such as homosexual rights and the historical understandings of medical issues like alcoholism and stillbirth.
