Dr. Safiya Okai Ugbaje

Biography

Safiya Okai-Ugbaje is a lecturer at the Australian National University in the School of Cybernetics. With a focus on the intersection of artificial intelligence, sustainable practices, and societal transformations, she is dedicated to utilizing cybernetics as a means to tackle pressing challenges in the modern world. Safiya convenes the Building Cyber-Physical Systems course within the Master of Applied Cybernetics program. She holds a Master of Science in Management and a PhD in Educational Technologies Computing. Her research interests include the sustainable adoption of emerging technologies, particularly in educational contexts, as well as the development of frameworks to enhance existing practices in resource-limited environments. Additionally, Safiya has worked on projects related to the strategic use of information and communication technology for development, with a particular emphasis on creating culturally appropriate interventions to ensure online safety for Indigenous children in Australia. Her current research priorities involve the widespread impact of artificial intelligence in educational technology, particularly innovations supported by generative AI and large language models.
