Biography

Sahar Khoury is a sculptor known for her improvisational and makeshift works that blend various media and techniques. She focuses on uniting unlikely materials, emphasizing that unity often surpasses purity, reflecting a worldview shaped by her experiences. Born in Chicago and currently based in Oakland, California, Khoury has a background in anthropology, having worked on community-based research projects concerning the structural vulnerabilities faced by Latinx migrant labor communities. She received her formal art education later in her career, particularly developing her practice within the Bay Area's queer community during the late 1990s and 2000s. Throughout her artistic journey, she has created works for diverse platforms, including music shows, theater performances, and street protests. Khoury's artwork has been exhibited in notable venues such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where she was honored with the 2019 SECA Art Award, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Oakland Museum of California, the Wattis Institute, and the UC Berkeley Art Museum.
