Biography

Samuel S. Wang is a Professor and Director of the M.D./Ph.D. program at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. His research focuses on information processing and learning in mammalian brains, particularly contributions of the cerebellum to sensorimotor processing and cognitive functions. His lab investigates the neural mechanisms of behaviors, exploring how cerebellar outputs influence both motor and non-motor functions through a variety of experimental methods including multiphoton imaging and whole-brain cellular activity mapping. Wang's pioneering work also includes understanding the postnatal development of autism spectrum disorder and identifying neural mechanisms that underlie specific behaviors. His current experiments utilize next-generation calcium sensors for decoding neural activity and employ latent-state analysis to understand evidence accumulation in decision-making tasks. With a history of significant findings related to synaptic learning rules and brain evolution, Wang contributes to advancing knowledge in neurological and psychiatric disorders, especially concerning plasticity and behavioral complexity.
