Sara Epp’s research interests are related to social agricultural planning in Northern and Southern Ontario, examining issues related to farmland loss, agricultural viability, land use conflicts, and the social aspects of rural life. Sara has a diverse background in agricultural planning, measuring farmland loss in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, and exploring the value of Agricultural Advisory Committees in Southern Ontario. Her research also focuses on rural migration and the social transformation of rural communities. It includes studies of Old Order Mennonite communities in Northern Ontario, exploring migration to the north, and the impacts on local communities as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with economic development and land use planning. Future research endeavors include examining land use planning related to cannabis production in Southern Ontario and overcoming barriers to agricultural development in Northern Ontario. Current research projects involve exploring farmer migration from Southern to Northern Ontario, resilience within Old Order Mennonite communities, enhancing local food production systems, and planning strategies for cannabis production while addressing social, economic, and environmental barriers to agriculture in Northern Ontario.
