Dr. Sara Schwebel

Biography

Sara L. Schwebel is a professor at the School of Information Sciences and serves as the director of the Center for Children's Books. Her expertise lies in history, children's literature, and pedagogy. Schwebel's research examines the ways in which books, media, and school instruction influence young people's understanding of the past. She is the author of "Child-Sized History: Fictions of the Past in U.S. Classrooms" (Vanderbilt University Press, 2011) and editor of several important works in children's literature. Notably, she co-edited "Dust Gold Medal: Rediscovering Children's Literature Newbery Centennial" (Routledge, 2022) marking the centennial of the Newbery Medal. Additionally, she has contributed to the digital humanities through initiatives like the Lone Woman Indians Digital Archive, developed in collaboration with undergraduate students. Schwebel has received numerous accolades, including the Stanton-Horton Award from the American Historians and the Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor Award at the University of South Carolina. She has also been active in professional organizations, serving on the National Board of Directors for Girl Scouts USA and the Children's Literature Association. Her academic journey began in middle school history education, teaching in Virginia and Connecticut before transitioning to higher education at prestigious institutions. Schwebel holds a PhD in History and American Civilization from Harvard University and a BA in History from Yale College.
