Dr. Sara Soderstrom

Biography

Sara Soderstrom is an Associate Professor in Organizational Studies and the Program in Environment at the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability. Her research focuses on how individuals and organizations engage with societal sustainability challenges. She studies the ways in which people and organizations mobilize and develop coalitions, access key decision-makers, and attempt to implement sustainability initiatives. Soderstrom also explores how individuals and organizations respond to the ambiguities and uncertainties surrounding sustainability, making sense of emergent issues, prioritizing agenda-setting, and balancing multiple goals. Before her academic career, Soderstrom was a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where she worked on business transformation teams for retail and financial services organizations, leading post-merger activities for the Auto Club Group, part of the AAA umbrella organization. She completed her Ph.D. at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and has received accolades such as the 2011 Organizations and the Natural Environment, Academy of Management Dissertation Award.
