Biography

Sarah Walshaw grew up in Alberta, completing a BSc in Archaeology at the University of Calgary and an MA in Anthropology at the University of Alberta. She then migrated south to receive her PhD in Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis, where her interest in Africa was nurtured, leading her to study the Swahili language. In 2006, she began a SSHRC Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Archaeology Department at Simon Fraser University, while simultaneously teaching African History on a sessional basis at SFU and UBC. Her research interests include Africa, the Swahili Coast, ethnobotany, food culture, oral history, and historical archaeology. Walshaw has published extensively, with notable works addressing themes such as Swahili trade and urbanization, including her contributions to journals and monographs in African Archaeology. She has been recognized with awards for her teaching excellence, including the Cormack Award in 2016, highlighting her dedication to education within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University.
