Dr. Saturnino Borras

Biography

Saturnino ('Jun') M. Borras Jr. is a Professor of Agrarian Studies at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is involved in the Erasmus Professors program focusing on positive societal impact and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Peasant Studies for 15 years. With a distinguished academic background, he was awarded the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant for his project on commodity and land rushes, engaging with critical global issues such as food and climate change politics. Borras has been recognized globally, being a Distinguished Professor at China Agricultural University, and has previously held the Canada Research Chair in International Development Studies at Saint Mary's University. His extensive research includes transnational agrarian movements and land politics, particularly addressing the challenges of climate change and food sovereignty across various global regions including Southeast Asia and Latin America. Borras is deeply involved with rural social movements and co-coordinates several critical agrarian studies initiatives. Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of multiple academic journals and has received numerous awards for his scholarly contributions, including the National Book Award in the Philippines.
