Biography

Sebastian Ruth is a musician, educator, and organizer whose work explores the evolving role of music in contemporary society. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Community MusicWorks (CMW), a pioneering organization that connects professional ensemble musicians with urban communities in Providence, Rhode Island. Established in 2004, CMW moved to a purpose-built 24,000-square-foot center in 2024 to expand its capacity and reach. The organization offers a multifaceted programming approach that includes a full season of chamber music performances featuring 15 resident musicians and guest artists, a strong commitment to commissioning new works, and a tuition-free music education program serving 150 neighborhood youth. CMW also hosts workshops, student concerts, community dinners, and various initiatives that foster deep connections between musicians, families, and the broader community. In addition to his work with CMW, Sebastian is a visiting lecturer at the Yale School of Music, where he teaches courses that intersect music with social action and community service. His online course, 'Music Social Action,' hosted on Coursera, has reached over 25,000 participants worldwide. He has collaborated with several renowned artists and ensembles, and his essay 'Repairing Social Fabric: Music, Performance, Pedagogy Work' was published in the 2022 Routledge anthology 'Repair: Sustainable Design Futures.'
