Dr. Selcuk Sirin

Biography

Selcuk Sirin is a Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at NYU Steinhardt. He conducts empirical research aimed at understanding the needs of children and families, providing professionals and policymakers with the knowledge required to address the needs of vulnerable populations. His goal is to enhance the lives of marginalized children by using a developmental context as a general framework. Sirin's research focuses on immigrant children in New York, Muslim youth, and refugees from Turkey and Norway, particularly in schools serving at-risk students. He has published extensively in top-tier journals such as Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Review of Educational Research, and Pediatrics, aiming to inform practitioners and policymakers about the challenges faced by marginalized children. Additionally, he has served on policy committees for the National Academy of Sciences, the Urban Institute, and the Migration Policy Institute, and has collaborated with organizations like UNESCO and Save the Children to improve the lives of refugee children. His lab also focuses on interdisciplinary approaches in the Applied Psychology program to help students bridge psychological theory, research, and practice in a multicultural world.
