Biography

Selma Powell is a Teaching Professor and Director of the Special Education Teacher Education Program at the College of Education at the University of Washington. She earned her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Central Florida in 2012, focusing her dissertation on developmentally appropriate use of mathematics applications on tablets in early childhood classrooms. Prior to joining UW, Dr. Powell served as an elementary special education teacher in Tampa, Florida, for nine years, working in public schools and teaching students with disabilities from preschool to fifth grade. At UW, she has transformed the Special Education Teacher Education Program in numerous ways: by increasing enrollment and retention of teacher candidates of color, developing collaborative co-taught courses with the Elementary Teacher Preparation Program, and shifting the curriculum to highlight inclusive and culturally sustaining practices. Dr. Powell's research interests focus on the preparation and induction of critical, inclusive teachers who support and sustain multiply-marginalized children and families.
