Biography

Senel Poyrazli is a Distinguished Professor of Counseling Psychology at Penn State Harrisburg. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston, an M.Sc. in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University, and a B.A. in Psychological Counseling Guidance from Hacettepe University in Turkey. His clinical background includes working with adolescents, college students, adults, and married couples, dealing with issues primarily related to relationships, psychosocial adjustment, decision making, and trauma. Poyrazli's research primarily focuses on the psychosocial academic adjustment processes of college students and immigrants, with additional interests in cross-cultural competency. He has explored the academic failures faced by international students and the microaggressions experienced by Syrian refugee college students. His teaching areas include counseling skills, interviewing, group counseling, family therapy, and multicultural competency. Poyrazli has received numerous awards for his teaching and research, including the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award for the 2022-2023 academic year. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has held editorial roles within various psychological divisions. His research has been published in several well-known journals, and he is actively involved in supporting the immigrant community in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
