Biography

Silke Mentchen graduated from Cologne University and has been teaching German as a foreign language at tertiary education levels since 1994. She holds a position in the German Section and is a fellow, director of studies, and tutor at Magdalene College, responsible for the curriculum of the undergraduate degree courses taught at the faculty. Her teaching interests include translation studies and beginners' language courses. Mentchen has developed online materials for the faculty’s teaching of translation and has published 'Upgrade German', a grammar exercise book, alongside 'Speed German', which focuses on common errors. She has been involved as a coordinator for various projects and has organized workshops on multilingualism as well as a conference on German multilingual contexts. Mentchen has also presented papers internationally on the use of technology in language teaching and is currently leading a series of workshops on German ab initio teaching and learning. She has served on the jury for national competitions and has facilitated numerous events to promote engagement with German literature.
