Biography

Silvia Ferrari is the John Brancaccio Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University and serves as the Associate Dean for Cross-Campus Engineering Research. Previously, she was a Professor of Engineering and Computer Science at Duke University and the Founder and Director of the National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education Research Traineeship fellowship program, focusing on Wireless Intelligent Sensor Networks (WISeNet). She currently leads the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems Controls (LISC) at Cornell University and co-directs the Cornell-Unibo Věho Institute for Vehicle Intelligence at Cornell Tech. Her research interests lie in active perception, robust adaptive control, learning, and approximate dynamic programming applied to multiscale dynamical systems. Ferrari is the author of the book “Information-driven Path Planning Control,” published by MIT Press in 2020, and has delivered a TED talk on robotics. Her contributions to the fields of robotics, sensor networks, and computational intelligence include the development of new theories and algorithms for learning and control in distributed systems and mobile sensor networks. She has received several prestigious awards, including the ONR Young Investigator Award, the NSF CAREER Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).
