Biography

Simon Marginson is a Professor of Higher Education at the University of Oxford, where he serves as the Joint Editor-in-Chief of the journal Higher Education. He has retired from full-time work and is expected to continue his research in doctoral education until 2024. He is also affiliated with the University of Bristol, Tsinghua University in China, and the University of Melbourne in Australia. Simon led the ESRC Centre for Global Higher Education from November 2015 to 2024. His research primarily focuses on global and international higher education, especially in East Asia, as well as the social contributions of higher education. He is currently preparing an integrated theorization of higher education. Simon's scholarship is widely published and cited, with a Google h-index of 92 as of September 2025. His recent books include "Assessing Contributions to Higher Education" (2023), "Brexit, EU Students, and UK Higher Education: Broken Bridges" (2025), and "Global Higher Education Upheaval: Common Goods, Geopolitics, Decolonization" (2026). He actively engages with topics regarding public goods in higher education and the implications of globalization on educational systems.
