Dr. Simone Ispa Landa

Biography

Simone Ispa-Landa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University and a faculty fellow at Northwestern's Institute for Policy Research. Her research interests primarily focus on race and gender inequality, peer status hierarchies, and engaging scholarship in educational settings. Ispa-Landa employs qualitative methods to explore issues of isolation, exclusion, and violence within K-12 and higher education environments, delving into the lived experiences of students and teachers regarding social policies and potential avenues for change. Her recent projects emphasize partnership-oriented studies that investigate high school discipline and student attendance, receiving funding from the Spencer Foundation, William T. Grant Foundation, and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Currently, she is working on a book project that examines accountability policy and its implications on race and gender inequality in suburban high schools, under contract with the University of California Press. In addition to her research, Ispa-Landa has been elected the Incoming Chair of the Sociology of Education section of the American Sociological Association (ASA) and contributes to the editorial boards of several academic journals including Sociology of Education, Gender & Society, and AERA Open.
