Biography

Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon began her teaching career in Glencoe, Illinois, where she taught sixth grade for five years. After leaving the faculty of the Department of Education at the University of Chicago in 1991, she joined Northwestern University to lead the Master of Science in Education Program. Haroutunian-Gordon has published extensively in the fields of psychology, philosophy of education, and teacher education. Her notable work, 'Turning Soul: Teaching Through Conversation in High School', received the American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Award in 1994. Her latest book, 'Learning to Teach through Discussion: The Art of Turning Soul', published by Yale University Press in August 2009, has been favorably reviewed. Additionally, Haroutunian-Gordon served as the past president of the Philosophy of Education Society in 2003.
