Emeritus Professor Steve Dovers originally trained as an ecologist and natural resource manager, working in agricultural experimentation and local government heritage management. He studied geography at the graduate level and gained a PhD in environmental policy in 1996. He became a member of the academic staff at the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at ANU in 1997. From 2009 to 2017, he served as the Director of the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU and was the inaugural ANU Public Policy Fellow. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia and has served on various committees, including as Chair of the Management Committee for Future Earth Australia. Additionally, he has acted as Associate Editor for the Australasian Journal of Environmental Management and been a member of the editorial boards of several journals. Steve has published over 250 journal articles, books, and reports, and has supervised around 70 PhD scholars, as well as numerous Masters and Honours students. His contributions to urban studies were recognized with the Australasian Cities Research Network Medal in 2019.
