Dr. Stephen Pape

Biography

Stephen Pape is a Professor Emeritus at Johns Hopkins University School of Education, where his research focuses on technology-enhanced classroom contexts that foster mathematical understanding and the development of strategic behaviors in students. He has led funded projects, including a national randomized control trial that examined the impact of classroom connectivity technology on Algebra achievement and classroom interactions. Pape has served as the co-principal investigator on the Institute of Education Sciences-funded grant, Prime Online, which is an online professional development program for general and special education faculty teaching grades five. He has also held leadership roles, including chair and member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Research Committee and a three-year appointment as a board member-at-large for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators from 2012 to 2015. Pape received his doctorate with a focus on educational psychology from the City University of New York after a career as a middle-school mathematics and science teacher in New York City. Prior to joining the School of Education at Johns Hopkins, he served as an associate professor at the University of Florida from 2006 to 2012 and as the mathematics education coordinator at Ohio State University from 1998 to 2006.
