Dr. Stephen Runge

Biography

Stephen Runge is a distinguished pianist and educator, currently serving as the Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Music and Director of the School of Art at the University of Manitoba. He holds a Doctor of Music degree in Piano Performance from l’Université de Montréal and has studied at prestigious institutions including the Glenn Gould School and Tanglewood Music Center. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba in 2025, he was a professor at Mount Allison University, where he also served as the Head of the Department of Music. Runge has received several accolades for his excellence in teaching and research, including the Paul Paré Excellence Award and the J.E.A. Crake Award. A noted collaborator, Runge has performed with various orchestras, including the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and has recorded numerous albums showcasing significant works for piano. Additionally, he has been involved in national music festivals and serves as the Vice-President of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association, contributing to the development of future musicians through workshops and conferences. His commitment to education and music is evident in his teaching methodology and the recognition he has garnered within the academic and artistic communities.
