Dr. Stephen Sutton

Biography

Stephen Sutton is an Emeritus Professor of Behavioural Science and Honorary Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge. He studied social psychology at the London School of Economics and computer science at City University. He received his PhD from the University of London in 1981, focusing on the research of fear appeals. In 2001, he joined Cambridge, having previously held positions at the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London and University College London. His research programme at Cambridge centres on the development and evaluation of behaviour change interventions related to smoking cessation, physical activity, diet, and medication adherence, utilizing both face-to-face and digital approaches. Professor Sutton has served on committees for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), and has advised the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Cancer Institute. Additionally, he has held Visiting Professorships at various universities in Europe and Australia. Currently, his main research activity involves analyzing and writing data collected as part of a £2.2 million NIHR Programme Grant on Medication Adherence, for which he is the Principal Investigator.
