Dr. Steve Marshall

Biography

Steve Marshall is a Professor and the Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. His research focuses on applied linguistics, language education, and plurilingualism, with a significant emphasis on academic literacy and the experiences of English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners. His work includes large-scale assessments of academic literacy programs and collaboration with global partners to design professional development for language teachers. Marshall’s research also examines the pedagogical responses to linguistic diversity in classrooms and the roles identities and multiple languages play among plurilingual students, particularly in the context of Latin American migration. He has published extensively, including EAP textbooks, and has a popular YouTube channel offering resources for academic writing. Throughout his career, he has contributed to the understanding of cultural contexts in pedagogy and has analyzed the educational potential of linguistic landscapes in multilingual communities.
