Dr. Steven Seidel

Biography

Steven Seidel is a Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he focuses on Arts Education. He has a Doctorate in Education from Harvard University, obtained in 1995. With over a decade of teaching and writing experience, his work centers around the improvement of teaching and assessment in arts education across elementary and secondary settings. Seidel directs the Arts Education Program and has acted as the principal investigator for Project Zero, engaging in deep examinations of student work and the documentation of learning processes. His research includes notable projects such as the Evidence Project, which studies the use of student work as evidence in learning and teaching, and Making Learning Visible, which explores group learning assessments in partnership with Reggio Emilia early childhood schools in Italy. He has also conducted significant studies on the sustainability of arts education partnerships, exemplified by his work in the Arts Survive project. Seidel leads a monthly discussion group known as the ROUNDS project, which fosters collaborative assessment among educators. Additionally, he has taught high-school theater and language arts in the Boston area for 17 years, contributing significantly to arts education discourse.
