Dr. Susan Neuman

Biography

Susan Neuman is a professor of Childhood Literacy Education at New York University Steinhardt, specializing in early literacy development. Her research and teaching interests encompass early childhood policy, curriculum development, and effective reading instruction for children living in poverty. As the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, she established the Early Reading program and developed the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program, significantly impacting literacy education nationally. Professor Neuman has authored or edited eleven books, including the three-volume 'Handbook of Early Literacy Research', and has written over 100 articles. Her notable works include 'Changing Odds for Children at Risk' and 'Multimedia Literacy Development'. Her recent publication, 'Words: Increasing Vocabulary in the Common Core Classroom, Pre-K to Grade 2', showcases innovative methods to enhance vocabulary acquisition among young learners. Neuman earned her doctorate from the University of the Pacific in California. She is dedicated to examining critical education issues and equipping future educators with the skills needed to thrive in urban classrooms.
