Biography

Suzanne Curtin is a Professor and Vice-Provost of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs at Brock University. Her research focuses on early speech perception and social communication in both typically developing infants and those with atypical development, including ASD. She aims to understand how early speech perception and word learning contribute to the acquisition of phonological systems. Her work examines the infant biases that direct attention to crucial information in speech signals to bootstrap language learning. Funded by SSHRC and NSERC, Curtin co-leads a SSHRC Partnership Grant focused on literacy and cognition in a multicultural digital context. Her publication record includes numerous studies in developmental psychology and linguistics, exploring the intersection of speech perception, language development, and cognitive outcomes in infants, particularly regarding differences related to risk factors for autism. Curtin's contributions to the field advance the understanding of infant language processing and have been published in various prestigious journals.
