Suzanne King is a professor of psychiatry at McGill University and the lead investigator at the Psychosocial Research Division of the Douglas Research Centre since 1991. Her research has focused on schizophrenia, examining associations such as family attitudes and the expressed emotions of patients. One major project, EnviroGen, investigates risk factors for schizophrenia including genetics, prenatal stress, obstetric complications, childhood trauma, and teenage cannabis use. Notably, her Project Icestorm studied the effects of prenatal stress stemming from a natural disaster, following 150 pregnant women during the 1998 ice storm to assess its impact on their children’s cognitive, behavioral, and physical development. King has continued this line of research through the Iowa Flood Study, which aimed to replicate her earlier findings with a larger cohort, and the QF2011 Queensland Flood Study that involved a randomized control group assessing birth support practices and biological samples from births of 300 Australian women. Through her work, King seeks to integrate data from both prospective and retrospective studies to develop a neurodevelopmental model of severe mental illness.
