Dr. Sylva Frisk

Biography

Sylva Frisk is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Gothenburg, specializing in higher education and focusing on policy, organizational, and cultural aspects. Her research interests encompass academic leadership, teaching and learning quality development, and quality assurance. Frisk adopts an anthropological approach to understand the cultural context of higher education practices and the challenges faced by institutions today. She specifically researches gender issues and Islam, concentrating on the religious practices of urban women in the context of Malaysia's modern religious reform movement. Frisk is also interested in the gendered dimensions of religious and political activism in Malaysia, conceptualizing agency through a feminist anthropological lens. With 20 years of experience in academic leadership roles, she has served as Deputy Dean of Education and has been involved in various teaching and coordination roles within the School of Global Studies. Frisk's teaching experience spans undergraduate to master's level courses, and she is particularly engaged in developing pedagogical methodologies for active learning environments.
