Biography

Takashi Fujitani is the Dr. David Chu Professor and Director of Asia Pacific Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. His research focuses particularly on modern and contemporary Japanese history, East Asian history, Asian American history, and transnational history, primarily emphasizing the U.S.-Japan context. His past and current work highlights the intersections of nationalism, colonialism, war, memory, racism, ethnicity, and gender, exploring how these disciplinary and area studies boundaries shape the study of such issues. Fujitani is the author of 'Splendid Monarchy' (UC Press, 1996; Japanese version, NHK Books, 1994; Korean translation, Yeesan Press, 2003) and 'Race Empire: Koreans and Japanese during WWII' (UC Press, 2011; Japanese version forthcoming from Iwanami Shoten). He has held grants and fellowships from prestigious institutions including the John S. Guggenheim Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies. Additionally, he has served on various editorial and institutional boards for journals like the International Journal of Korean History and Cross-Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review. Currently, he is working on a book that assesses the location of the Japanese monarchy within contemporary Japanese understandings and contestations of the meanings of nation, gender, race, and globalization.
