Dr. Tania Granadillo

Biography

Tania Granadillo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Western University. She obtained her PhD in 2006 from the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on linguistic and sociocultural anthropology, with a particular emphasis on language broadly understood. Her geographical area of focus includes indigenous languages of Venezuela, where she has worked with the Mapoyo (Carib family) and Kurripako (Arawak family) languages. In addition, she explores the Oneida Thames, a language spoken near the university. Granadillo's research interests encompass anthropological linguistics and cover a variety of themes, including endangered languages, language revitalization, documentation and description, as well as language shift and maintenance. She pays close attention to language ideologies and policy, discourse, storytelling, and verbal art. Her interests also include linguistic typology, writing systems, phonology, morphosyntax, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and the relationship between language and culture, particularly in bi/multilingual contexts. Furthermore, her work intersects with many socio-cultural topics such as kinship, political economy, religion, and landscape.
