Biography

Tanja Tajmel studied Physics (BSc), Meteorology (BSc), and Philosophy (BA) at Graz University of Technology and the Karl-Franzens University Graz, Austria and the University of Padova, Italy. She received her Master in Physics Education and Philosophy at the Karl-Franzens University Graz and completed her PhD in Physics Didactics at Humboldt-University Berlin, Germany. Joining Concordia University in 2018, she held a professorship at the University of Education Upper Austria previously. In 2019, she served as a Visiting Professor at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Tanja holds a Concordia University Research Chair focusing on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (EDI STEM). Her teaching includes courses on the social aspects of artificial intelligence and equity in STEM education. Tanja's research interests encompass the politics of STEM education and its discourses' impact on social equity. She has studied linguistic barriers for language learners in science classrooms and examined diversity discourses in STEM education, promoting a critical view of hegemony in STEM education. She is an advocate for the human right to STEM education, contributing to significant funding initiatives aimed at promoting equity in education. Her publications include scientific papers and textbooks on STEM education for teacher training.
