Biography

Theo Röhle is an Associate Professor in Media Communication Studies at the University of Gothenburg, with a background that includes senior lecturer positions and roles as a program director for a B.A. program in Digital Media Analysis. He earned his M.A. from Stockholm University in 2003 and completed his Ph.D. in Media Culture at the University of Hamburg in 2009. His academic journey also includes postdoc positions at the Research Training Group 'Automatisms' in Paderborn and Braunschweig in Germany. Röhle's current research project focuses on the impact of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on media organizations, examining it as a new form of censorship. He explores how various DDoS attacks function as a form of progressive digital activism, increasingly silencing the coverage of politically inconvenient issues. His teaching primarily involves introductory courses in Media Communication Studies, where he covers topics related to data studies, media power dynamics, and the implications of digital methods. Throughout his career, he has contributed to numerous publications addressing themes such as media behavior in response to digital activism and the evolving nature of communication in digital contexts.
