Thierry Alquier received his graduate training in Cellular Biology and Physiology at Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse, under the mentorship of Dr. Luc Pénicaud. His PhD thesis focused on the role of insulin and the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter GLUT4 in the central nervous system's regulation of glucose homeostasis. He later became an American Diabetes Association and Fondation Bettencourt Schueller-funded postdoctoral fellow, joining Dr. Barbara Kahn's laboratory at Harvard Medical School to further investigate hypothalamic control of energy metabolism and neuroendocrinology. His work at Harvard identified the role of hypothalamic AMP-activated protein Kinase (AMPK) in regulating food intake through nutrient-sensing mechanisms. Dr. Alquier was then a postdoctoral fellow at the Canadian Diabetes Association, studying nutrient-sensing in pancreatic beta-cells. In 2009, he joined the Université de Montréal as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Cellular Biology. His laboratory is located at the Technopôle Angus research site, Centre de recherche du CHUM.
