Biography

Prof. Thomas Becker holds the Chair of Brewing Beverage Technology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His primary research focuses on cereals and vegetable raw materials within a biotechnological and process engineering context. Becker aims to identify and understand the fundamental mechanisms for intervening in the processing of beer, beverages, and bakery cereal products. His work seeks to design knowledge-based methods to optimize specific processes and product properties, enhancing disciplines such as tissue engineering and materials research, while also integrating automation aspects relevant to Industry 4.0. Before his current role, he studied food technology and biotechnology at TUM, briefly worked in industry, and completed his doctorate in General Chemistry and Biochemistry at TUM in 1995. He achieved habilitation in Fluid Mechanics and Process Automation in 2002, subsequently holding the Chair of Process Analytics Grain Technology at the University of Hohenheim. Becker returned to TUM in 2009 and has served various leadership roles, including Director of the Research Department of Engineering Sciences for Food and Biogenic Raw Materials and Dean of the School of Life Sciences from 2016 to 2021. Additionally, he was the Managing Director of EIT Food CLC Central GmbH in Munich from 2017 to 2018.
