Biography

Thorsten Joachims is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Science at Cornell University, where he has been a faculty member since 2001. He also serves as the Director of the Cornell AI Initiative. Joachims has held several leadership positions, including interim dean of Cornell Bowers College and associate dean for research. His research expertise lies in the areas of machine learning, human interaction, and applications in information access, particularly focusing on counterfactual causal inference, policy learning, ranking, structured output prediction, and learning from implicit feedback. He has contributed significantly to the field through his involvement as program chair for various conferences including ICML, KDD, and RecSys and as a member of the IMLS Board and SIGKDD Executive Committee. Joachims received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Morik at the University of Dortmund after obtaining his Diplom in computer science in 1997. He has been recognized as an ACM Fellow and AAAI Fellow for his outstanding achievements in computing and artificial intelligence.
