Tim Hurtz, an oboe associate professor, joined the Penn State faculty in 1993 and is a member of the Pennsylvania Quintet. He was previously a faculty member at Illinois State University from 1973 to 1993, where he taught oboe and performed with the Sonneries Woodwind Quintet. Hurtz has performed with prestigious ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and San Francisco Opera Ballet, among others. He has given recitals and clinics across the United States, Europe, Canada, and Japan. His teachers include notable figures like William Criss and Robert Bloom. From 1978 to 1981, he was the principal oboe for the National Opera in Mexico City and also taught at the Mexican National Conservatory of Music. He held the position of principal oboe for the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Chamber Orchestra, and Peoria Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1993. Hurtz is a frequent performer at the Moon Beach Festival in Okinawa. He is currently the principal oboe soloist for the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra at Penn's Woods. Hurtz has traveled extensively to give clinics for Fox Products and was a soloist and chamber musician at Ireland's 'Summer Music Shannon' international music festival from 2006 to 2009. His recent recordings feature works by various composers for winds, released by Centaur Records, Inc.
