Biography

Professor Topun Austin is a Consultant Neonatologist at Cambridge Reproduction University and an Honorary Professor of Neurophotonics at University College London. He serves as the Director of the Evelyn Perinatal Imaging Centre (EPIC) located at Rosie Hospital, Cambridge. His main research interests focus on brain development and injury in newborns, utilizing novel monitoring and imaging technologies to translate routine clinical care. Prof. Austin collaborates closely with Professor David Rowitch, Head of Paediatrics at Cambridge University, on the development of the Cambridge NeuroNICU, which aims to create a brain-oriented model of care for newborn infants in intensive care. Additionally, he is a co-director of neoLAB, a collaborative group based in the EPIC Biomedical Optics Laboratory at University College London. His research group is involved in the development of state-of-the-art optical imaging systems to study functional activity in the developing brain, with current projects examining aspects such as the role of sleep in functional connectivity, the relationship between neural synchrony in mothers and their babies, the functional imaging of motor activity in infants at risk of cerebral palsy, and methods for optimal seizure detection in newborns.
