Biography

Tovah Shaw is a Lecturer in Immunology at the University of Edinburgh. She received her undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge. After spending three years conducting laboratory-based research in biopharmaceutical health service settings, she earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Immunology from King's College, University of London. In 2015, she completed her PhD in Immunology under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Couper at the University of Manchester. Following her doctoral studies, she undertook a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Dr. John Grainger, where she developed a keen interest in macrophage biology and mucosal immunology. In 2019, she commenced a BBSRC Discovery Fellowship which facilitated her transition to independence, and in 2021, she joined the University of Edinburgh to establish her own research group. Her research primarily focuses on gut resident macrophages and their roles in supporting intestinal function and combating infections. The lab investigates the types of macrophages in the gut, their specialized functions, and how manipulating these functions can lead to the development of evidence-based therapies to promote and restore gut health.
