Biography

W. Stephen Smith is a renowned Baritone and Professor at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. He holds two degrees, an MM and Hon. DAH from the University of Arkansas, as well as an MPA from Oklahoma City University. Prior to his current position, he was a faculty member at the Juilliard School for thirteen years and also taught at the University of Houston, where he served as Chair of the Voice Department. Smith has a rich history of involvement in prestigious institutions, including the Houston Grand Opera Studio from 1990 to 2003 and the Aspen Music Festival and School from 1996 to 2017. He is the author of the book 'Naked Voice: Wholistic Approach Singing', published by Oxford University Press in 2007. His students have achieved significant recognition, performing leading roles in major opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and have won numerous prestigious competitions. Additionally, Smith has performed in forty opera and musical theater roles as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony and Oklahoma Symphony, and has directed twenty-two productions while serving as music director and conductor.
