Biography

William R. Beardslee is a prominent figure in the field of child psychiatry, serving as the Olga E. Monks Professor at Harvard Medical School and as academic chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Children's Hospital Boston. He completed his M.D. at Case Western Reserve University in 1971. Dr. Beardslee has extensive training in general psychiatry as well as child psychiatry, with a focus on psychiatric research. His enduring research interests center on child development, particularly regarding the risks associated with severe parental mental illness. He is keenly interested in the protective effects of self-understanding, enabling children and young adults to cope with adversity. His work includes studying self-understanding among civil rights workers and cancer survivors, as well as assessing children of parents with affective disorders. Currently, he directs the Preventive Intervention Project, a study funded by the NIMH aimed at enhancing family resiliency and understanding among children of parents with affective disorders. He also oversees the Boston site of a multi-site preventative study evaluating the efficacy of cognitive behavioral group interventions for at-risk youths. Beardslee has authored over 100 articles and chapters, with notable works including "Way Lead Life Histories Civil Rights Movement" and "Darkened Room: Protecting Children Strengthening Family Parent Depressed."
