William Heindel is a cognitive neuroscientist specializing in human memory, attention, and perception in both neurologically intact individuals and brain-damaged patients. His research is focused on understanding the neural and cognitive substrates underlying these processes through a variety of methodological approaches, including cognitive neuroscience and cognitive neuropsychology. Heindel received his B.S. in engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980 and his Ph.D. in neurosciences from the University of California, San Diego in 1989. He joined Brown University in 1992 after completing postdoctoral training in neuroimaging and neuropsychology at UCSD. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of how aging and neurological diseases impact cognitive functions such as semantic memory and attention. His current projects investigate the cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease and the neural mechanisms of category learning. He is also involved in developing novel neurocognitive markers for the detection and treatment of neurological disorders.
