Biography

William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career as a horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and educator in the United States and abroad. He is a member of the New York Woodwind Quintet, Yale Brass Trio, Triton Horn Trio, and an emeritus member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra St. Luke’s. A passionate advocate for new music, Purvis has participated in numerous premieres of pieces for solo horn, concerti, horn trios, and woodwind quintets by composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Steven Stucky, and Elliott Carter. As a frequent guest artist at renowned chamber music organizations, he has collaborated with some of the world’s most esteemed string quartets. At Yale School of Music, Purvis teaches graduate-level horn students and is featured in performances in the School’s Faculty Artist Series. A Grammy Award winner, he has recorded extensively for numerous labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, Naxos Records, Koch Entertainment, and Bridge Records.
