Biography

Xavier Ochoa is an Associate Professor of Learning Analytics at NYU Steinhardt, where he also serves as the Doctoral Program Coordinator within the Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology. Dr. Ochoa holds a Ph.D. in Engineering (Computer Sciences) from the University of Leuven, Belgium, and has a rich academic background with a Master’s degree in Applied Computer Sciences from Vrije Universiteit Brussels and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) in Ecuador. His research interests lie at the intersection of education and technology, specifically focusing on leveraging advanced technologies to enhance pedagogical practices and augment human capabilities in educational environments. He has pioneered work in Multimodal Learning Analytics, combining quantitative techniques with recent advances in Artificial Intelligence and low-cost sensors. This work aims to develop tools that foster awareness, self-reflection, and decision-making among students and educators in both physical and online learning environments. Xavier leads the Augment-Ed research group and has participated actively in professional societies, serving as Vice-President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Learning Analytics. He has received numerous accolades for his research contributions, including awards from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and multiple paper awards at international conferences.
